An enchanting 5-acre woodland garden on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park in Devon, famous for National Collections of Birch trees and Alder trees and the annual ‘Mythic Garden’ sculpture exhibition. Winner of the Gardener’s World magazine ‘Gardens to Visit SW’ award 2010. The garden has been created over 40 years by the late Kenneth Ashburner, and now a charity has been formed to safeguard this unique collection of birch trees and alder trees. Visit our woodland garden and see the many sculptures, and help support the project by buying an alder or birch tree from our nursery.
We have over 1000 Birch (betula) and Alder (alnus) trees in our collections. We were awarded National Collection status in 1995, in recognition of Kenneth Ashburner’s achievements in researching and collecting many birch and alder species from all over the northern hemisphere. At Stone Lane Gardens we have European trees such as Betula pendula, Betula pubescens, Alnus incana, Alnus glutinosa, Alnus viridis and Alnus subcordata. North American trees like Betula papyrifera, Betula cordifolia, Betula nigra, Alnus rhombifolia, Alnus sinuata and Alnus rubra. Asian and Far Eastern trees such as Betula utilis (Himalayan birch), Betula utilis ssp. jacquemontii (White Himalayan Birch), Betula medwedewii, Betula raddeana, Betula insignis, Betula mandshurica, Betula albosinensis (Chinese Red Birch) and Betula ermanii. Alders from this region include Alnus hirsuta, Alnus barbata, Alnus japonica, Alnus fauriei, Alnus sieboldiana and Alnus pendula. Rare birch such as Betula ashburneri and Betula chichibuensis.
