W4106 bark

Chinese Red Birch are beautiful trees, much loved by gardeners. Perhaps the finest of all birches for subtlety of bark. A base colour of pale orange-brown, with a touch of crimson and pink – all overlain with a misty white bloom of betulin. Smooth bark, peeling freely in sheets. Delicate foliage. Light shade. Originating from China.

W4106
These controlled-pollination seedlings have plenty of reddish orange in the base colour of the
bark, on which the light browns, yellows, and pinks are overlain.
Famously cultivated at Werrington Park from seed collected in Sichuan province by Ernest Wilson in the early 20th Century.

Height: 9-15 metres, lightly spreading crown.

Special notes:

These controlled-pollination seedlings are excellant for planting in groups to form a small copse, as the natural variation in bark colours will give a miriad of subtle shades, resulting in a very natural feel.
