Chinese Red Birch are beautiful trees, much loved by gardeners. Perhaps the finest of all birches for subtlety of bark. A base colour of pale orange-brown, with a touch of crimson and pink – all overlain with a misty white bloom of betulin. Smooth bark, peeling freely in sheets. Delicate foliage. Light shade. Originating from China.

Gansu
A pronounced orange in the base colour, with the reds, yellow-browns and pinks overlain. Cultivated at Ness Gardens – from the Chinese Forestry Service, Gansu.

Height: 9-15 metres, lightly spreading crown.

Special notes:

These controlled-pollination seedlings are excellant for planting in groups to form a small copse, as the natural variation in bark colours will give a miriad of subtle shades, resulting in a very natural feel.
