Chinese Red Birch are beautiful trees, much loved by gardeners. Perhaps the finest of all birches for subtlety of bark. A base colour of pale orange-brown, with a touch of crimson and pink – all overlain with a misty white bloom of betulin. Smooth bark, peeling freely in sheets. Delicate foliage. Light shade. Originating from China.

‘Pink Champagne’
A popular cultivar with delicately soft pale pink bark colouring. A lighter barked tree than many albosinensis – selected from a specimen tree from Gansu in our arboretum.

Height: 9-15 metres, lightly spreading crown.

Special notes:

Cultivars like ‘Pink Champagne’ and ‘China Rose’ are good for achieving identical colouring in a group, although this kind of planting is best in a formal setting. For informal woodland-style plantings, it would be better to use controlled-pollination seedlings such as W4106 or Gansu.
