Open Call to carve Cornish Granite
Open call – to carve or work with a large piece of Cornish granite.
Call closes 1200 15th March 2022
SPONSOR: Caradon Granite, Lantoom Quarry, Cornwall
Applications are invited from sculptors or installation artists to carve or work with a piece of Cornish granite weighing approximately 1.5 tons and being just under 1 cubic metre in volume. The finished piece must articulate the theme ‘connectivity’.
Applicants must be early career/emerging artists, based in or connected to the South West of England. The stone can be chosen from a selection available at a quarry near Minions in Cornwall either by visiting the quarry or viewing photographs with measurements.
One applicant will be selected to produce their proposed piece.
The selectors will be sculptor and past Stone Lane exhibitor Dominic Welch, a representative of the sponsor Caradon Granite and a Stone Lane trustee.
The successful applicant will be gifted the stone, worth £600, and expected to produce the piece as specified in the application. It must be finished and ready for exhibition by 15th June 2022. It will be exhibited at Stone Lane Gardens for the duration of the annual sculpture exhibition from 1st July 2022 to 31st October 2022.
The stone will be delivered to and collected from the artist’s studio or work site, provided it is within the South West of England. Transport is generously offered up to £1400 in costs. Ideally the artist should attend Stone Lane to supervise installation.
If the piece sells Stone Lane will take a 30% commission, the remainder being kept by the artist.
