Anne-Marie Moss

During my career as a Theatre/TV prop maker in London and the south east I developed a love of carving and modelling so in 1991 I returned to art college to study sculpture based on the human figure in Stoke on Trent.
Most of my work is based on the human form and is often emotive, the stone is carved in a way that entices the viewer to engage with the senses and ideas develop through working sympathetically with that particular rock shape and type. I use recycled stone from the West Country but more recently I have acquired Alabaster and Marble from Carrera. Some stone types take a lot of work to finish whereas others lend themselves to texture and tooled surfaces. A few of my pieces have gone to art collectors overseas. I am part of a collective of creatives that deliver workshops for wellbeing to the public and the services.
A little about process…. I have more than one project on the go at a time to avoid getting stuck and aiming to keep the work fresh; often stone is out on the bench weeks before I begin to carve and is left out whilst working on other sculptures. When working out ideas for more figurative sculptures I sketch the idea out in clay first but always with the stone shape and form in mind. The work develops gradually without imposing an idea onto the stone; carving in harmony with that particular stone shape and type.
