19: Sail Away

Bath stone on a Porland stone plinth. I created this piece in 2022 towards the end of my formal stone masonry course. I wanted to produce something pleasing to the eye which has a simple form yet suggests movement and calm – lines that flow and take your eye around the piece and create interest. I draw inspiration from places across the South West and from nature, history and the built environment. The form of this piece is inspired by the peace and tranquility of watching sailing boats in Penzance.

About Jennie

I have only recently found sculpture as an artistic expression after completing a stone masonry course in Bath and wanting to develop those tool skills further in a more creative way. I have always been a crafty person dabbling in lots of different mediums. I was born in Yeovil, Somerset, studied at Plymouth, moved to Bath and married a Cornishman so I feel very connected to lots of very different elements of the South West. From the rugged coastline of West Cornwall to the Georgian architecture of Bath, the industrial heritage of North Somerset and so much more in between.
