53: Folding
For some years this log of Birch was lying in my garden and I kept looking at it and
wondering about the forms and sculptures hiding inside. When finally I began to carve, it was
the wood with its colours and forms which led the way in a process of unfolding.

The slow process of carving wood with hand tools is a conversation with the wood, my inspiration and myself. All my sculptures are inspired by the unique qualities of a specific piece of wood, a form in nature or a geometric form. Sometimes all three come together and a new sculpture is born. I have been based in Devon since the early 90’s and worked for many years pedagogically with three dimensional arts and crafts.
