Susan Purser-Hope

2025 marks the 20th anniversary of Susan Purser Hope becoming a fused glass artist. Previously, Susan worked as an Interior Designer, establishing her Midlands based consultancy designing commercial projects such as hotels, hospitals and retail outlets. Her consultancy became one of the top 40 in the United Kingdom.
However, by 2005 Susan had achieved everything that she wanted to do in the interior design world and was ready for a new challenge, returning to university to learn about glass making. Susan then established her own glass studio, developing architectural commissions and fulfilling community-based projects.
Susan’s work is organised into collections in which she develops her love of pattern making. She has developed a glass technique which is very individual to herself. Susan makes unique, one-off pieces of patterned glass from a variety of glass elements such as glass sheet, frits, confetti, stringers and paints. After fusing, these are then cut into different shapes and fused onto a glass backboard. Finally, this form is grouted with a glass mixture and fired again. The resulting art works highlight the beauty of glass and the way that it reflects colour, texture and light.
Susan specialises in both wall hung works of art and 3-dimensional sculptural pieces for both internal and external use. She also accepts commissions. Susan has a passion for colour and this is the main reason why she chose to work with glass. Glass is a magical material – both clear and opaque, fragile and tough, solid and fluid. It is a of contradictions and material multiple techniques. For Susan Purser Hope, it is impossible to ever get bored working with it!
