Almut Woolard
Wood is Almut Woolard’s favourite sculpting material. Each piece of wood is
individual and the slow process of carving wood with hand tools is a
conversation between the wood, the inspiration and the artist. Being in the
studio and feeling the form developing is a quiet, mediative experience.
All her sculptures are inspired by the unique qualities of a specific piece of
wood, a form in nature or a geometric form. When all three come together a
new sculpture is born.
A lifelong love and interest in animals, plants and nature has been central in
Almut’s life since childhood and continues to inspire her artistic work.
Active engagement in sculpture and crafts has been part of Almut’s life since
childhood.
After training as puppeteer and puppet maker in Germany, Almut studied
sculpture at Emerson College in Sussex.
Almut has been based in Devon since the early 90’s and has worked for
many years pedagogically with children and teenagers teaching a variety of
three dimensional arts and crafts.
In her Devon studio she teaches woodcarving and whittling ( knife carving )
to adults and children. Teaching and sharing her love of working with form is
an ongoing part of her life and a continuous inspiration.
